Yerba buena residence III

MALIBU, CA

Situated in fire prone area and clad in bondarized metal siding, Yerba Buena III is constructed to withstand a brush fire as the Malibu Studio did, which is situated below the main house. The studio was constructed as a fire-proof structure in 2008, featuring Rheinzink metal siding and minimal overhangs.. Twice before the main house burned to the ground; first during the Green Meadows Fire of 1993, and recently in the Woolsey Fire of 2018. As the architect’s own house, the 3200 square foot house and 600 square foot garage are arranged in a three story structure that steps down the hillside making use of the existing foundation. Walls of glass face either the ocean to the south or Boney Ridge to the north.

The architect’s long time interest in mid-century architecture can be seen in the playful butterfly roof and transparency between indoor and outdoor space throughout the house.

The project will be completed September of 2021.
