This is a proposal for bringing public space into the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. The strategy was inspired by the occurrence of growth as infill on a small scale in the area - how one material spills into the negative space of another, thereby assuming the form of that container while retaining its autonomy. I imagined the potential for this process as a model for urban growth - whereby public space could spill into the holes and cracks between existing buildings. In this scheme, tensile structures of woven stainless steel mesh and steel frames attach to existing buildings, offering spaces that are both contingent on context and entirely autonomous in spatial effect.
